Cinco de Mayo
Slim Man - The Reality Show

Cinco de Mayo H2O...Washington, DC 5.5.05

It's Cinco de Mayo and we just finished a wild gig in DC, and here I am...at the computer? No wild women? No crazy parties? No tequila and Coronas with the Chiquitas?

Nah. We're the Slim Men. We roll into town, save the day, and roll out.

H20 is a club on Water Street in DC. A huge club. Really huge. There were 500 people in this club to see the Bona Fide/Slim Boys, and that was only one section of the club.

We met at the club around 4:00 PM. Howie (Bongo Boy), and John E (Drummer Dude) were already there. Kevin (Sax Man) and George (Piano Man) were at the hotel next door, checking in. Why did they get hotel rooms when they live so close? I can only guess. But I like hotel rooms. Room service. Channel surfing. Big beds. Solitude. You can just let it all hang out.

We did our soundcheck around 5:00 PM. Soundcheck is a blast. All the guys are loose and screwing around.

We do lots of songs we don't normally do. All in all, a fun time. After sound check, they brought us food. Lots of food. Chicken, fish, rice, string beans and carrots and red bell peppers. And they brought a huge deli platter. 5 pounds of salami, ham, cheese, pickles, olives, tomatoes...there was a lot of food. I snapped o photo of the guys chowing down...We keep eating like this, and they'll start calling us the Fat Men.

We went on at 6:30. Jackie from Smooth Jazz 105.9 brought us on. We started our first song, 'Club Charles'. The line for the free buffet was distracting me a bit. At first I didn't know what it was, and then I figured it out. Must have been 50 people in line, off to the right of the stage. I thought it might have been for the bar, but The Boys had made it up and back a few times already with a few rounds.

I could tell the PA was loud. I could hear the speakers in front better than I could hear the stage monitors. It was rockin'! We played for about 45 minutes and took a 15 minute break.

And then we went right back up. Wow. We started off with 'The Horse You Came In On' from the Bona Fide 'Poe House' CD. You see, we did some Slim Songs, and some Bona Fide songs, some slow songs, some fast songs...and some half-fast songs.

We did 'Take Me to the River' by Al Green. We did 'X Ray Hip'. We mixed it up a bit. We ended with 'Low Rider' and Diana from Olney, Maryland came up to play the cowbell. She was young, sexy, and she could play the cowbell. What more do you need in a woman?

Thanks to all who made the gig possible--Smooth Jazz 105.9, the folks at H2O who treated us so well, the sound dudes, and all the folks who came out to see the show. We had folks drive up from Richmond, Virginia. People came from Baltimore. It was harkin'-sparkin'.

Than ya, thank ya, thank ya. Who loves ya? Happy Cinco de Mayo!!!
